night|day, rain|sun, old|new

hellooo! ookaayyy. 3rd set of pictures. sorry if the blog takes a long long time to load due to the many pictures you see here. patience. patience.

i'm trying to upload my space needle fireworks video and NBA game video onto youtube so i can post it here, but the uploading is taking a long time 'cos the wireless here is shared by many people, hence the bandwidth is really low. ssiigghh.

this set is dated from new year's eve right up to 4th jan. enjoy! =)

on new year's eve, a whole bunch of us cooked dinner at home and after washing up, we walked for about 3.8km to this place called the gasworks park. as the name obviously suggests, that place used to be this gas plant in the middle of the city. and as the city progressed and became affluent and modern, the ugly huge metal parts of the gas plant became an eye-sore to the beautiful seattle skyline.

so in a genius move, they transform this place into a park that overlooks lake union and downtown seattle. and the ugly rusting metal structures that were once the gas plant is now part of the scenery. i was struck by how the past juxtaposed with the present. how the ugly became part of something beautiful instead of being looked down upon. sadly the park was very poorly lit and i couldn't get any shots of the big metal parts. will go there another time in the day.

and meanwhile, this series of pictures are taken with the higher ISOs and very very slow shutter speeds. i kept telling myself to bring the small tripod with me on this trip but i forgot and left it at home. it's ok. there's still places like the bench and railings for me to place my camera. the black foreground you see is the lake. and the very bright background you see is downtown seattle.

spot the space needle standing tall. i wonder if there's a law preventing anyone from building another sky scraper near to the space needle, 'cos if that were to happen, i think it will lose its grandeur.

if i remember correctly and if i got my bearings right, this is queen anne hill, the town next to downtown seattle. one of the residential areas. jiejie, according to the internet sources, meredith of grey's anatomy lives here. =)

here is a shot of all of us, past midnight. the first picture of 2007! it was really really very cold now. and we still had to walk all the way home! but after walking and stopping for donuts, it was all warm and nice. =)

on new year's day, we were afraid that shops would be close, so my neighbour's friend who is studying at UW showed us around the campus. this was my first time exploring the campus. and it was drizzling. dreary weather. so the pictures not as nice. this is smith hall. the tree is really peculiar. sticking so close to the building.

a street in the campus. the campus as i said is huge. i often need to cross this street to get to my school, which is quite far away from my house. and my school is the health sciences building, shared with the medicine students and the UW medical hospital.

a research facility up ahead.

the duck pond! i pass by everyday several times. and i'll always look at how the ducks are huddling against the wind and cold. so cute.

if you can see, the ducks are making their way to my direction. i think they were really hungry. always swimming in our direction. =)

just next to the duck pond. i love the architecture.

look at how gloomy the weather is.

the empty red square. on school days, this place is bustling with activity and many students rushing here and there to get to classes. with a campus so big, they only give 10 minutes in between each lesson for people to go from place to place.

first day of school! the sun is out. =)

the path that leads from my house into the heart of campus. lined with beautiful trees. with such weather and scenery, walking to school which is 25 minutes away is not a problem.

to all my bioscience friends, remember our 306 developmental biology assignment? one of the nobel prize winners (the woman who worked on drosophila) is now doing her research here! this is the fred hutchinson cancer research center. proudly displayed at their lobby is their collection of 3 nobel prize medals by 3 very very brilliant scientists. with a 4th just recently obtained. i was SO excited when i walked in. i have one graduate class here. so gotta take a 20 minute bus ride from campus here twice a week.

and here i thought fred hutchinson was some brilliant scientist. he turned out to be a legendary baseball star who died in his 40s of cancer. hence this cancer research center was named after him.

praying and hoping they will offer me an internship. =)
oh anyway on my way here, it hailed. as in, there was hail falling from the sky! not rain! i was holding my umbrella cos that day was a horribly rainy day, but i looked on the ground and instead of water, there were small white balls all over. they look like styrofoam balls. so cute.

when my lesson at the hutch ended the night was falling already. at 430pm. then i realised the space needle was quite near! and with the beautiful dusk sky. no time to take a good picture 'cos it was cold and i needed to catch the bus home.

ookay. next post will have the videos (i hope) and pictures from the NBA game. but after which depending on our weekend activities. if gerri and ben do succeed in bringing us to go skiing, then more pictures will come! =)
